Meet other H1, H2 and H3 owners and talk about everything HUMMER!
General Motors’ distinctive Hummer H3 has won the Off-Road category in Popular Mechanics’ magazine's debut Automotive Excellence awards. The award recognised outstanding innovation, technology, quality, design and performance in eight categories: how much fun it was to drive, off-road capabilities, functionality, safety, design, energy efficiency, luxury and performance.
Create leaders in the SUV category. Period. That was the direction that was sent to the HUMMER engineering team.

The broke their mission down into three priority areas. First and foremost was performance. Any vehicle bearing the HUMMER name had to be capable of overcoming the most difficult terrain imaginable. Second came something new for HUMMER: real interior comfort. And third was the unmistakable HUMMER presence.

The vehicles the engineers sent back - the H2 SUV and SUT - overachieve in every category. The result? A pair of ultimate adventure machines that deliver a singular experience. In an H2 you can go just about anywhere. Do just about anything. And reconnect to all those thing that make you feel like yourself again.

On the outside it’s all burly good looks. Inside there’s standard seating for five and an available removable single third-row seat that expands passenger capacity to six. Without the third-row seat, there’s room for significant quantities of gear in H2 SUV’s secure, weathertight cargo hold. Need extra carrying capacity? the 60/40 folding second-row seat trucks handily out of the way to create an even larger cargo bay And tie-downs on the tailgate and cargo floor make it a snap to secure your load. SUV’s just don’t get more serious than this. The H2 SUT offers a look that recalls the open-top H1, along with extraordinary versatility. In normal use, the H2 SUT offers seating for five and the versatility of an open-air cargo box. But any time you need extra cargo capacity, the fold-down Midgate lets you reconfigure your vehicle in seconds. Simply lower the midgate's power window, fold down the second-row seats and, at the touch of a button, the Midgate easily drops and locks down over the folded back row. What you get for the effort is a spacious and extremely tough cargo area built for durability, with a cargo bed more then 1.8M (6 ft.) long and four embedded tie-downs.

With trademark design features like these, there’s no mistaking an H2 for anything but a HUMMER. Other distinctive visual elements include a powerful wide stance, round headlights and louvered hood grilles with the hood lift handles familiar from the H1. There are also exterior marker lights mounted on the roof, rubber hood latches and that classic HUMMER grille.

Behind the wheel of the H2, the first thing you'll notice is the roominess of the cabin - a product of the nearly vertical windows, which result in a roof that's nearly as wide as the vehicle's floor. Next, your attention will be drawn by the high style and intelligent function of the instruments and driver controls. Framed by a metal-look instrument panel, the gauges are a handsome analogue design with bright trim accents. The transmission uses an aircraft-style shifter that's positioned for easy use, and the steering wheel is equipped with convenient controls for the audio system.Every H2 is fully stocked with comfort and entertainment features. There's a dual-zone climate control system that allows you and your front passenger to customize your ambient environments, with a difference of up to 1 rc (30°F) between the two areas. The standard Premium Bose audio system features a CD player, a cassette tape player, eight high-performance speakers including a subwoofer and advanced AudioPilotŪ noise compensation technology. There's also an available XM radio receiver that offers dozens of channels with superb digital-quality sound and coast-tocoast coverage. * An optional in-dash navigation system is available to help find your way. Other amenities include a Driver Information Centre, cupholders, auxiliary power outlets and a host of hooks and latches for tying gear down, all of which make the H2 more comfortable, inviting and versatile.Touch a single button and the cabin of the H2 transforms into an open-air environment. With the H2, the four side windows power down in sync. With the SUT, all five windows power down, including the Midgate window behind you, creating an incredible feeling of freedom. The SUT also features a standard sunroof, which amplifies the experience.

The Vortec 6000 V8’s 325 horsepower and 365 pounds-feet of torque let the H2 accelerate, climb hills and tow heavy trailers without breaking a sweat. (The Tow/Haul feature integrated into the electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission helps, too, by letting you select a more aggressive shift pattern at the touch of a button.) The Vortec 6000 V8 is loaded with high-tech features, too, including variable throttle control that lets you select reduced throttle sensitivity for precise control over the engine’s power in tricky low-speed off-road manoeuvres. An H2 can climb a 60 percent grade and traverse a side slope with a pitch of 40 percent. It can also negotiate its way over 16 inches vertical barriers and operate all day long in water up to half a metre deep. The bottom line: wherever you want to go, your H2 has what it takes to get you there.

With a transmission with five operational modes and a two-speed planetary gearset, you can adapt your H2’s performance to all types of driving conditions at the touch of a button. There’s also an advanced traction control system (TCS) that’s peerless in the SUV category. If one wheel is spinning more then others, TCS applies braking pressure to the spinning wheel to help it regain its composure. At the same time, it transfers available torque to the wheels that have traction. Using this system, an H2 with 3 spinning wheels can still move forward, even on an uphill grade of 10 percent. Then there’s the TC2 setting. The TC2 simply allows for additional wheels slip before the traction control kicks in, so the wheels of an H2 can actually paddle through certain surfaces like deep sand or snow. It all boils down to a kind of confidence other drivers can’t even imagine.

The H2 front suspension also incorporates a host of features that make it extremely impressive off-road, including high-strength 46 mm monotube gas-charged shock absorbers and a dualcomponent "jounce bumper" system that absorbs jolts in rough terrain requiring maximum suspension travel. The first of these components, a special urethane bumper mounted to the frame itself, helps prevent the suspension from hitting the frame. The second is a bump stop ring integrated into each front shock absorber. It's designed to slow the suspension's travel before the urethane bumper is impacted.Other features include a large 36 mm tubular stabilizer bar that helps control body roll when cornering, and a 1814 kg (4000 lb.) axle weight capacity. The springs incorporate three distinct spring rates: a soft initial rate that provides a comfortable on-road ride; an intermediate rate; and a stiff final rate that helps prevent full compression in extreme terrain. Also available is an automatic self-levelling rear air spring suspension system that includes an on-board air compressor. Central to this system are a pair of inflatable bladders that operate independently of each other and can maintain different inflation pressures when required. This suspension helps keep the H2 level under load and can provide steeper arrival and departure angles when conditions call for it.The on-board compressor also comes with a hose that can be used to inflate tires. In challenging off-road conditions you can deflate the tires for added traction, then return the pressure to normal when it's time to go back on-road. The ABS is a four-channel system that controls each brake individually and responds appropriately to varying road surfaces.
